Nulu is a bourbon label from the Prohibition Craft Spirits team that doesn't run its own stills; it hand-selects mature barrels of straight bourbon distilled by MGP in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and builds its releases through blending and finishing. The Reserve is the brand's small-batch straight bourbon, and this California Exclusive Batch 1 is a very small batch drawn from four- to six-year-old MGP bourbon and set aside for the California market. The barrels are blended to keep the flavor consistent from batch to batch, and the bourbon is non-chill filtered, so the oils and compounds that carry flavor and texture stay in the bottle rather than being filtered out. The core Nulu Reserve is made from a high-rye mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley, and Nulu's notes for it describe oak, rye spice, cinnamon and cereal grain, reminiscent of a cinnamon muffin, with brown sugar and vanilla appearing as it opens in the glass.
