Leopold Bros Three Chamber Rye Whiskey is the whiskey that resurrected a lost American style. Before Prohibition, much of the country's heavy-bodied rye came off three-chamber stills, a slow, steam-driven design that scrubs oils and aromatics out of the mash in a way column stills cannot. None survived, so Todd Leopold of Leopold Bros in Denver, Colorado had one rebuilt from historical manuscripts, the first in nearly a century, and this is what it makes.
The mash is 80% Abruzzi rye, a heritage grain favored by early American distillers, and 20% barley malted on Leopold's own floor, the largest traditional floor-malting room of any distillery in the United States. It is bottled in bond at 100 proof after roughly five years in oak. Breaking Bourbon rated the 2022 release 4 out of 5, describing floral, creamy malt, ripe white peaches and cream with cinnamon and white pepper on the nose, rye spice balanced by orange, vanilla and caramel on a rich, creamy palate, and a cinnamon-bark finish, praising a whiskey that blazes its own trail among American ryes.
